4-way extension? As in a mains power lead?
I was looking at things like that years ago in the old apartment, and was mainly stymied by an absence of relays that I could drive from TTL and could switch 250V AC. (This was before Maplin opened in town IIRC ; years ago). Since then I've got hold of a set of radio-controlled mains pass-through plugs which would probably form a more economical base for remote control of home electrics.
A GSM shield would require a SIM card and account. I guess that you use a cheap and nasty Asda phone.
Any security?

I have a 4-way extension cable, which I have removed the insides from and replaced with an arduino, GSM shield and relay. This allows me to send text commands to it so I can remote control it.
