I use one of these -

Does the job quite nicely, and can usually be picked up quite cheaply on
ebay. They have a pretty decent range of wall-sockets, PIR sensors, light
sockets etc. for more permanent setups too.
The built-in software is pretty eccentric though (can't rename/delete
devices without a factory reset, don't give devices names starting with
'heat'...). It's limited to 2G sim cards as well, though I suspect that's
the case with most devices of this type.
