Thanks for all the replies! Plenty of options I've never heard of (FORTH
and hip-hop compilers!) In the end I've managed to wrangle more CPU cores
which will allow me to run multiple pollers and more RAM + separate swap
drive.

Yup, I've had a look at the performance tuning page. I currently poll every
5 mins in Cacti and Observium but Observium only manages 45ish devices in
that time. We changed poller in Cacti as it was not getting enough time to
poll all devices in the network properly so were getting gaps in out graphs.
