I think I'll have to rethink the comms between the arduino and the
host PC a bit to support a push button (or give up on pressing the
button having an immediate effect) but that shouldn't be an
insurmountable problem.

Would a single reminder that the space isn't open in case you've
forgetten be sufficiently un-annoying that you could refrain from
breaking things?
