Pimoroni thinking it should be fine convinced me to look a bit further into the datasheet. There is table of characters (table 4), and there are latin alphanumerics in both versions, the difference is mostly whether you get Japanese characters or the various European accented/other characters. So for English either version should be fine. 

Looks like you were getting characters from the high half of the table rather than the low half that has English characters, so I'd look at checking what codes you're sending and wiring for the data lines. Would also be good to check if you are getting the corresponding character just with bit 7 being high rather than low or if it's a random other character.
